Scrapbook Paper Art

Like most new parents, we were on a budget. So I got pretty crafty for The Moose's nursery. Here's some simple and inexpensive artwork you can make with scrapbook paper. Scrapbook paper is about 30 cents for a 12x12" sheet (when you buy it on sale at Hobby Lobby). I think the frames were about $15 each. And then the blue background is poster board at about $1 per sheet. So all 3 of these together were less than $60. You can apply this technique to any size frame, any color scheme, and any shapes in the artwork. Take a tour of his nursery here.

I did this before The Moose came home about 11 months ago. I did not take pictures of the process. So I'll just have to explain what I did. Hopefully you can follow along.

Find your shapes. Being a nursery, I decided on animals. I also knew I wanted 3 vertical (taller than it is wide) pieces of art. So I just googled "animal coloring pages" or "animal clip art outlines" and clicked on the images tab.

I copied and pasted the 3 animal shapes I decided on into Photoshop. If you do not have Photoshop, take your images to a copy shop and they can do this for you. I sized them to the size of my frame. And then printed the images on regular 8.5"x11" paper, but spread over several sheets. Then taped the sheets together to make my life size art work. Cut around the outline of the shape.

Now arrange your scrapboook paper over the shape. Tape the edges together. Then tape your artwork shape to the back of the scrapbook paper. Cut the scrapbook paper to your shape.

Now you have your animal (or other shape) with the scrapbook paper patchworked together to make adorable art! Just tape or glue it to your poster board. Frame it.
