I don't buy anything special for his snack pack (except goat cheese). I just cut up fruits and veggies that we already have. I try to give a good mix of different colors (you know, eat the rainbow). When I start making dinner, I put him in his high chair with a couple spoonfuls from his snack pack and he feeds himself.
At this point, I really just want him to explore the food. Feel it, smell it, taste it. He actually does a surprisingly good job eating it. There have been a handful of times he gets in the mood to watch the food fall to the floor. I let him drop what he wants. He doesn't throw it, just lets go and watches it hit the ground. Personally, I think that's just part of the learning process. He still eats the majority of it, so I let him explore.
Here's what has gone in his snack pack so far:
- Spiced apples
- bananas
- blueberries
- strawberries
- grapes
- cooked carrots
- arugula
- sunflower greens
- cucumber
- cooked zucchini
- cooked squash
- deli meat
- ground pork
- brown rice pasta
- boiled egg
- green bell pepper
