The Moose's Snack Pack

I started giving The Moose finger foods about a month ago (at 9 months). Two or three times a week, I prepare what I call his snack pack. It's just a mix of finger foods for him. He will eat out of it for a few days, then I compost what is left and make a new one for him.

Above: Spiced apples, grapes, deli meat, ground pork, goat cheese, cucumber
Above: goat cheese, cucumber, strawberries, deli meat

Above: boiled egg, cooked veggies (carrots, zucchini, squash), brown rice pasta, strawberries

I don't buy anything special for his snack pack (except goat cheese). I just cut up fruits and veggies that we already have. I try to give a good mix of different colors (you know, eat the rainbow). When I start making dinner, I put him in his high chair with a couple spoonfuls from his snack pack and he feeds himself.

At this point, I really just want him to explore the food. Feel it, smell it, taste it. He actually does a surprisingly good job eating it. There have been a handful of times he gets in the mood to watch the food fall to the floor. I let him drop what he wants. He doesn't throw it, just lets go and watches it hit the ground. Personally, I think that's just part of the learning process. He still eats the majority of it, so I let him explore.

Here's what has gone in his snack pack so far:
  • Spiced apples
  • bananas
  • blueberries
  • strawberries
  • grapes
  • cooked carrots
  • arugula
  • sunflower greens
  • cucumber
  • cooked zucchini
  • cooked squash
  • deli meat
  • ground pork
  • brown rice pasta
  • boiled egg
  • green bell pepper
