I have been thinking about making my a homemade mix of this (it wouldn't be difficult) and could even add my choice of essential oils. I may do that in the future. But for now, I like this $8 version. Here's a breakdown of the ingredients with the ewg rating. See more about the ewg rating on this post. The site rates cosmetic products and ingredients on their toxicity level. 0 is nontoxic, 10 is very toxic. Here are the ingredients with their rating (this product was not in the database, so I looked up the individual ingredients):
- Deionized Water: 0
- Aloe Gel: 1
- Bladderwrack Extract: 0
- Herbal Extract: This is a generic term for some kind of herb mix they used. It didn't pop up in the database. I don't like that it's not specified in the ingredient list, but I'm letting it slide because I'm not worried about herbal extracts.
- Rose Extract: 0
- Gardenia Extract: 0
- Propylene Glycol: 3 for allergies and irritation (I wish this wasn't in it. When I make my own, clearly I won't add this. But it's not horrible and I don't have any reactions to it.)
So overall a great nontoxic product! I love it. I use it mostly for a makeup setting spray. I have never used any other setting spray (Urban Decay Setting Sprays, etc.) so I can't compare. But this one works for me! I do use it occasionally at night, but mostly just after I apply makeup.
Under the corner of my eye, I get little bumps. Nothing big and nothing that I worry about or do anything about. Right where my pinky is pointing in the picture below. When I use this spray regularly, those bumps disappear. I don't know if it's the aloe or rosewater or something else.
After I apply my makeup, I spray 3 or 4 spritzes on my face. That's it. Be sure your mascara has dried before you spray (I usually spray before I apply mascara).
Sorry, bathroom mirror selfies are always pretty awkward.
Overall, Mario Badescu is a great brand. But look at each product individually. Some of them are not good. I've even seen parabens in some of their products (even if you don't know anything else about toxic ingredients, most people know to avoid parabens). Check the ingredients on the ewg site.
On their website, there is an info section somewhere where you can fill out a survey on your skin type. Then in a couple weeks (the site says 2 days. It was 2 weeks for me), they send you an email for more info. Then they send you a pretty awesome sample pack. This is what they sent me. Honestly, some of the products were good. But I am so happy with my current natural skincare regimen that I'm not switching. You can see my routine here.
I really like the drying cream! Great for pimples. Don't tell anyone, but my husband uses it, too!
