Hair & Face Detox Mask

For any post that involves my skin, I always give this disclaimer: I will be 34 in 5 months. Other than cropping, I have not edited these pictures. The wrinkles are mine, nothing added, nothing removed and this is my actual skin care.

I got this recipe from The Coconut Mama. I love her blog. I have done a similar face mask for years with bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar (see it here; I explain what bentonite clay is in that post. It's a volcanic ash with an electric charge that pulls toxins out of your body. Crazy, I know.). The Coconut Mama used it just on her hair. But since I already use a similar recipe for my face, I figured why not kill two birds with one stone?

Mix:
  • 1/2 cup bentonite clay (find it here on Amazon)
  • 1/2 cup aloe gel (see note below)
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar (it has to be raw & unfiltered. Find it here on Amazon )

Note on aloe gel: I bought this Lily of the Desert accidentally. I meant to buy aloe juice. This brand has carrageenan. I didn't even look at the label because I didn't mean to buy it. Me and my son both take aloe juice as a supplement daily (see more here). I will not buy this brand again.

Mix the ingredients. See the bubbles? That's a natural reaction.

Here's pre-mask. I need to apologize for the pictures. Not only are they bathroom selfies, but also bad lighting and no flash (because of the mirror). Clean and dry face. I washed my hair 2 days ago (I no poo. See that here).

Just lather the mix in your hair and on your face. Be generous.

I just wrapped my hair in a bun. No fastener needed, it just glues itself together. Let it sit for about 20 minutes. I took a bubble bath and read my Adoptive Families magazine. I meant to take this picture with the California Baby Bubble Bath, since that's what I used (not the body wash. Oops.). Find it here on Amazon. I LOVE California Baby! The EWG database is a great place to check the toxicity of your products (see my post here on ewg). See the bubble bath rating here. It got a 0 on a scale of 0-10, with 0 being non-toxic and 10 being very toxic.

After about 20 minutes, I washed with baking soda and rinsed with apple cider vinegar. To learn more about my no poo process, click here.

Disclaimer, for the after pictures, I did blow dry my hair. Not really FOR the pictures, but because it needed to be done. I cut my hair 2 days ago (I am going to tell you why I cut my hair in the next post & will link it here) and haven't fixed it yet. So I needed to blow dry it to see what adjustments needed to be made. Another reason I blow dried is because I got a new brush yesterday! It's hard to blow dry when you don't have a handle on your brush. It gets very hot. The handle broke on my other brush at least 6 months ago and I've just been lazy. I know, I know. At least for you viewing in, it looks like I spend one million dollars a month on coconut oil, but won't buy a new brush. I can't explain.

For my face, I did my regular routine after the mask (see it here). I washed with Dr. Bronner's (I have been loving the baby formula for my face lately; find it here on Amazon. I have peppermint for my body wash at the moment) and baking soda (I recommend Bob's Red Mill. See why here. Find it here on Amazon) . Then I used apple cider vinegar as a toner. Then I used argan oil as a moisturizer. I rubbed the remaining argan oil on my fingers through my hair (find the argan I use here on Amazon; and see my full post on argan oil here). That's the only product in my hair.

Overall review: EXCELLENT! I will do this often! Thanks, Coconut Mama!!
