I am a barter shareholder. That means I volunteer a few hours a week and get my CSA share for free. Sometimes I work in the fields on the farm, sometimes work the booth at the farmers' market, sometimes clean and weigh the vegetables, sometimes clean the chicken coop, sometimes help with bookkeeping, whatever they need. Today I helped with the harvest. I harvested basil and beets.
And a big bonus! They gave me a bunch of beets to play with today! I'm going to try my hand at pickling them. I'll definitely make more beet chips. They have plans to expand their services and offer baked and canned goods. So I'm going to practice a few recipes and see if I can help them out. I'll tell you all about what I do with these beets soon.
Here are lots of pictures from today's visit.
Above: The beginnings of an orchard. Cardo's Farm Project is leaving this land and moving to land they own. The owner of this property is going to start an ochard. Here are peach trees and sweet potatoes are growing in between the trees.
Above: Basil. I deflowered and harvested these.

Above: Lemon Basil. We deflowered these plants but did not harvest them today.

Above: Tomatoes. They harvested a bunch of tomatoes today.

Above: Beets. We harvested a lot of beets.
Above: I love looking over the fields and just seeing their little straw hats floating above the crops.
Above: This is a blistering beetle. This was our obstacle today. Hey, on an organic farm, there's always happy critters living in the beds. This guy blisters you if you crush him. But he eats the grasshopper larva, which is helpful. He also flies.

We harvested 2 big tubs of beets.
Here are my beets I get to play with!
