Teething Biscuits

The Moose loves his teething biscuits! This is the basic recipe that I've been making for a few months. He first had them at 7 months (see the important note at the bottom). He's getting ready for something more substantial, so next time I am going to work on a recipe with oats in it. Update: Here's my oatmeal avocado teething biscuits.

1 c. flour (your choice. I use brown rice. Next time, I might get quinoa flour)
1 c. rice cereal
1 banana
3 tblsp coconut oil
ice water (1/4-1/2 cup)
flavor with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, your choice (I used ginger & cinnamon this time)

A note about rice cereal. I do not like it as a meal for a baby. At all. It's highly processed, not much nutrition (and what is has is synthetically fortified, not natural, plant based). It's a filler. The Moose has never eaten rice cereal except in these biscuits and in his bottles when he was younger (he had horrible reflux and the rice cereal thickened his milk so he could keep it down; he no longer needs it). I wish he never had it in his bottles, but I never found a better alternative. I don't mind him having a little bit in this biscuit because it's kind of a treat and he doesn't get them very often. And this is really the worst thing he has ever had.

Preheat oven to 425. Mix the 1 c. flour and 1 c. rice cereal.

Stir in 3 tblsp. coconut oil.

Slice the banana and add it to the bowl.

Spice it up is you want (optional). Cinnamon and ginger are great for the immune system so I give them to The Moose every chance I can.

Add a bit of cinnamon.

Finely chop a piece of ginger.

Add about 1/4 cup of cold water. Add more as needed until the mix forms to a dough as you mix it.

I hand mix it to break up the banana.

Knead it on a flat surface.

Roll it out. It doesn't rise. So make it the thickness you think is good for your babe.

Cut. Again, it doesn't rise, so just cut it to the appropriate shape for your child.

 Place on ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake at 425 for about 10 minutes. Flip the biscuits. They will be slightly brown on the bottom (which will now be the top when you flip them).

Bake another 10 minutes. You want them to be crispy, but don't burn them. They do dissolve when he gums them.

Let them cool then store them in the freezer. In the freezer, they last longer and the cold sensation is soothing on their teething gums.

Here he is at 10 months eating his biscuit.

Here he is at 7 months.

NOTE: He first started eating these at 7 months. At that time, when he gummed down a piece to something that fit in his mouth, I took it away because he wasn't able to gum / chew it at that time. Now, he is able to gum it down until he chews it and/or it dissolves. So pay attention to your babies and don't give this or any other hard food if you don't feel comfortable about it.
