Joey Bunz Hemp Diaper Inserts Review

I mentioned in my cloth diaper post that The Moose's diapers were leaking at night. We were using 3 microfiber inserts that came with his Fuzzibunz diapers. And he still leaked. He does sleep 10-12 hours per night, which is a long time for any diaper. I am very well aware that him sleeping too long for his diaper is an awesome problem to have.

Natural fibers, such as hemp, are naturally more absorbent than synthetic fibers, such as microfiber. So I decided to try the Baby Kicks Joey Bunz Premium Hemp Inserts in Medium (phew, that's a long name for a product). You can find the hemp inserts here.  I ordered 2 packs of 3 for a total of 6. Each one is 2 inserts sewn together (so really, it was like getting 12 inserts) (initially, I ordered 6 more a month later; I now have 12 hemp inserts)

Reviews I read online said that the hemp Joey Bunz shrinks. So I wasn't worried about it being too big. I washed them before using.

 Above: This is after washing. The online reviews were right. The hemp insert shrunk down to the correct size. It's now the size of the large Fuzzibunz insert.

For the first night, we decided to try 1 Joey Bunz hemp and 1 Fuzzibunz insert. I put the hemp on the inside close to his skin.

I will report the results for the first week. With 3 Fuzzibunz microfiber inserts, his pj pants would be soaked.

1st Night: HUGE improvement! His pj pants were only the tiniest bit damp!
2nd Night: Same results! I love the hemp inserts. May just have to get a few more.
3rd: He leaked a lot. But he drank twice as much milk as normal at bedtime.
4th: Woke up bone dry!
5th: Dry, but cheated a little. He woke up in the middle of the night & I changed him.
6th: A little damp

Switching to 2 hemp inserts (instead of 1 hemp & 1 microfiber). Let's see what happens:
1st Night: Bone Dry!
2nd Night: Leaked out the side, which probably means that leg wasn't on tight, not a problem with the absorbency of the hemp.
3rd Night: Dry
4th: lots of leaks, but ate a lot at bedtime
5th: Dry
6th: Dry

I ordered 6 more inserts a month later. I would love to replace all of the microfiber with the hemp. But the microfiber work fine during the day, so no need to spend the extra money. I have a total of 12 hemp inserts. When I ordered the last round of hemp inserts, I also got a new, cute, cow print diaper!
