I love makeup. I don't wear it much, but I love it! I actually have an embarrassing amount of makeup and brushes for someone that doesn't wear much makeup. I really love watching youtube videos on makeup. I don't know why.
I clean my brushes 1-2 times per month. It depends on how much use they get that month. I use olive oil and dish soap. That's it.
NOTE on the dish soap: Detergents have been a pain in my rear. I have tried so many natural brands. I have made detergents using several different recipes (another note: I HATE borax). I just can't find anything I'm happy with. Either it's expensive or just doesn't work (usually it's the later). I'm still working on getting my natural detergent on, for now, this will have to do.
I fill a small bowl with about 75% olive oil and 25% dish soap. The dish soap is antibacterial and the olive oil moisturizes the brush hairs.
When you lay the brushes out to dry, you want them to be at an angle (upside down with the brush hairs at the bottom is best, but I don't do that). You want the brush hairs to be below the handle. The water needs to roll off the brushes instead of into the handles. If the water settles into the handles, it will damage the glue and your brush will fall apart. I roll up a washcloth and put it under another washcloth. I lay the clean brushes with the handle on the rolled washcloth so the brush hairs are lower so gravity can do it's thing with the water.
Before.
I swirl the brushes in the bowl of soap and oil. Start with small brushes and work up to the large ones. The large brushes will soak up all the cleaning solution and you won't have any left.
Swipe the brush on the edge of the bowl.
I throw things like my tweezers and eyelash curlers in the mix just to disinfect them.
Make a pile in the sink.
I also clean my beauty blender and powder puff (I sometimes wash the puff in the washing machine).
Rinse everything. Use warm water. Not hot, it will damage the glue holding the brushes together.
After.
