Germaphobia

I am not afraid of germs. I think hand sanitizer is toxic stuff. I am one of those moms that thinks germs strengthen the immune system. Yes, I wash my hands. Yes, I clean my house.

When we go out to eat in public (yes, this is the 2nd restaurant post in a week. That is very odd for us. Eating out twice in a month is odd for us, much less in 1 week.), I bring The Moose's snack pack and he will eat directly off the table. I can't give him a plate because he will experiment with gravity. So on the table it goes.
Avocados, spiced apples, sunflower greens, apricots
I am always a little amazed at the reactions I get from this. The waitress or someone at the table will try to offer an alternative. Which is great and helpful and everyone is just being nice. But I think it's interesting that I have never seen anybody offer a mom feeding her babe processed foods an alternative. In my personal rating system, processed foods are worse than a table that gets cleaned many times a day (granted, with non-natural cleaners usually, but it is cleaned and sanitized).

Now, let me explain a bit. I do not mean that to sound judgmental. All parents do the best the can with the best they know. Feed your kid whatever you want. This is just my commentary on just another way our society amazes me. So many people spend so much time avoiding germs. And then eat horrible processed foods full of chemicals. It's an interesting mix.

Speaking of hand sanitizer, I looked it up on the toxicity site. There were a few brands that got a score of 1 or 2 (0 is nontoxic, 10 is very toxic), including a product called The Germinator, how cute! And then it went to a 4 pretty quickly.

  1. I agree with you 100%, I think the germophobia is the reason most kids end up with so many infections because while young their immune systems aren't being "tested" with small things and then when a cold comes around it really knocks them out.

My 13 yr old had 1 minor ear infection during her infancy (while teething) and is rarely rarely sick. Why? We rebelled against the antibacterial everything when she was young. I stopped using products like that after having her and amazingly I got healthier and haven't needed to go to a doctor in years!
