Not All Coconut Oils Are Created Equal

Yes, this is more information about coconut oil. If you follow this blog, you know I love coconut oil. And I have heard from many readers that you have bought some! I know you'll love it, too. And I know it's overwhelming when you go to the store and there are so many kinds and so many price points.

I buy Nutiva. There are lots of great brands out there, so you can pick your favorite. Nutiva is my personal favorite. You can find it here. Here's the important things to look for in coconut oil:

  • Unrefined (not bleached, no added chemicals or additives, unfiltered, purest form)
  • Extra Virgin (made from fresh, not dried coconut, no bleaching, purest form)
  • Organic
  • Cold-pressed (when it is heated it loses some the nutrients)
  • Non-GMO

Nutiva is all of those things. And they donate a lot of money supporting sustainable agriculture, they do a lot of campaigning for labeling GMO products, promote industrial hemp farming, lots of good stuff. So they meet all my needs (bullet list above) for a coconut oil and they are a great company with great values. And a bonus, my local health food store has it at a great price! The Cupboard has it for $21 for a 54 oz. jar.
